This evening, the 40 Watt will be dishing up a real feast. On the menu is Toro Y Moi, Cloud Nothings and The Gold Party. While Toro Y Moi has become well-known in the indie/hipster/blog world, Cloud Nothings and The Gold Party are still emerging. There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing bands on the cusp of serious acclaim at an intimate venue like the 40 Watt. Everyone loves nonchalantly telling the story about how they saw Super Famous Band play at Open Mic Night. My friend’s dad tells an excellent version involving Jimi Hendrix and a grimy little club in the late ’60s. Maybe someday our stories will be similarly awe-inspiring…
Triumphed on a fervently gritty sound that seems almost intrinsic to southern Rock & Roll, the Drive By Truckers fine tune their craft by bringing gusto back to “the song & the story.” Their organic tunes prove paramount in what they call, “rebellion against the corporate music machines that dominate pop-culture in the name of what used to be called ‘Rock and Roll’.” Kissing farewell to the mainstream, the Truckers stand as an entity which encapsulates the spirit & creativity that makes our town the Classic City. Oozing with melodies whispered from the raspy vocal chords of Patterson Hood, the Drive By Truckers dream up homegrown fairy tales from the streets of our beloved, Athens, GA. This local dime shall be in our midst this weekend at the 40 Watt to do what they do best. Come give them some local love down on Washington Street, it shall be a string of shows you won’t want to miss!
