The Man Behind The Suits

Fresh off his 8 page spread in Vogue this month, the illustrious Nick Cave visited our very own Lamar Dodd School of Art this past week. His interlude came as a part of theĀ Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture Series. While gracing Athens, the artist also worked with students from the Art X and Fabric Design departments on the construction of instillation projects.
A man of many talents, Mr. Cave teaches at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he positions himself as the Director of the Graduate Fashion Program. That being said, Chicago is probably not why you’ve heard reference to this jack of trades. His notoriety takes root in the conception of his famous Soundsuits. These elaborate, other worldly creations, made mostly of found objects, are both stationary art and performance pieces that generate sound when put into motion.
The project he dabbled in at UGA was a very open ended one. Nick allotted little instruction to the piece, save the words “heavy weight” as the project commenced. In 3 days, students generated work involving sculpture, sound, and video, each exploring the term “heavy weight” by means of different avenues.
