Taco Time

Tacos, cheese dip, margaritas! Usually affordable and always delicious, it should come as no surprise that Mexican food is a favorite among students at the University of Georgia. Athens boasts a variety of Mexican eateries, ranging from chains to local favorites, ensuring there is something for everyone.

Fuzzy’s Taco Shop is Athens’ newest Mexican food stop, and with its downtown location, it is sure to give Taco Stand some stiff competition. Fuzzy’s boasts an extensive menu, not limited to the typical Mexican fare. With shrimp tacos, various sandwiches, and even “big salads,” I found it difficult to decide what to try first! I eventually chose the grilled shrimp taco and was not disappointed. As a native Floridian, I was excited to find a place that served multiple variations of a fish taco. But the food isn’t the only reason to try out Fuzzy’s, its most attractive attribute is a laid back, party atmosphere.

UGA: No Daddy’s Girl

TheCampusStyle.com_uga_munchies_mamasboy

There was leftover eyeliner in the corner of my eyes from the night before, my little brother’s J.Crew deck jacket was doing all it could to hide my goosebumps, and there was a faint pounding in the back of my head that closely resembled nails on a chalkboard. My parents had successfully survived Parents Weekend and now it was time for brunch. There was only one thing on my mind, and I wouldn’t settle for anything less: Mama’s Boy gravy. Read more >

Not All Dawgs Are Created Equal

theCampusStyle.com_UGA_Dawgs1

Unlike many students at UGA, when I was younger I never dreamt of being a bulldog. A harsh reality, but sadly it’s true. I didn’t have any relatives in the state of Georgia, let alone the Southeast. Yet somehow or another I ended up here. How? I will never know. What I do know is that during my very first trip to UGA, after a long day of touring the school, I wound up stranded and starving on North Campus. Little did I know that the food gods were actually watching over me because across the street stood my savior: a hot dog stand. My parents and I were hungry and didn’t think twice. We grabbed a hot dog and went on our way. Read more >

Happy Dunning

theCampusStyle.com_UGA_HappyDunning

As I walked out of my weekly pilates class in the historic L.M. Leathers Building, I stumbled upon a small space about midway of the train-track side of the building. Buried away in this cozy nook was the restaurant Gymnopedie. The restaurant’s name references Gymnopédies, three piano compositions written by 19th century French composer and pianist Erik Satie.

Georgia Tech: Farm-to-Table Southern Hospitality

Up to a festive game of Scout Mob roulette last weekend, my beau and I discovered a heart-of-downtown restaurant that promised farm-to-table upscale dining, and soon arrived at the classic Ellis Hotel’s Terrace restaurant.  Self-defined sustainable nosh, the Terrace offers a tucked-away breakfast, lunch or dinner at your choice of low-key indoor seating or on their front porch, shaded by giant ferns. Rollin’ with Farm Cart

There’s something in our nature that loves abandoning the dinner table in favor of more creative methods of feasting. If you put something on a stick, it automatically becomes 50% more appetizing. This phenomenon has been observed in everything from Rocky Mountain oysters to pickled sea cucumbers (“sea pickles”, if you will). The same goes for cones. And oh, how we love getting food outside – be it from a hot dog stand or, say, Athens’ very own Farm Cart.

Good Beer Matters

Come sip in splendor at Trappeze Pub this evening & ring in spring. If the spirit of the solstice & liquid hoppy heaven isn’t enough to entice you, then your interest will possibly be sparked by another proposition. Does Willy Wonka ring a bell? Chocolate may not be the medium of choice, but with every beer purchased your thirst will be incrementally quenched in an effort to obtain a certain prized possession. Gold is quite a treasured means of commerce these days. The golden ticket is up for grabs & soon to land in someone’s change purse. What golden ticket, you may inquire?? Well well well, there is a certain infrastructure that is currently being rebuilt on a fairly well know street corner in Athens, Ga. The Georgia Theatre is coming, kids! You may have heard of it before…possibly? In any event, the fine establishment will soon be in our midst & a golden ticket which grants a lifetime membership into musical magic is on the market. Come grab a drink & join the the race one Terrapin at a time. Details bellow. Happy Hunting!

King of Pops

On a hot Georgia day, few things are more satisfying than a sweet frozen treat. But when you’re enjoying the weather downtown, your freezer is depressingly far away. Do you ever wish that you could find icy relief around the corner? Never fear, King of Pops is here! The oh-so-cool Steven Carse founded King of Pops in Atlanta, where his stand-out popsicles have gained a dedicated following. Now things are poppin’ in Athens, thanks to Carse’s local friends Meg (pictured above) and Gus, both of whom have ties to the local culinary scene via Farm 255 and The National.

These aren’t your regular popsicles – there’s no “blue” flavor at King of Pops. These confections combine the whimsy of a childhood summer with a more “grown-up” palate. When we stopped by, the menu included: tangerine & basil, strawberry cream, blueberry & lemongrass, Arnold Palmer, banana puddin’ and fresh peach. The lineup varies by day, providing even more incentive to return again…and again…and again. We’ve heard that the chocolate sea salt is pretty amazing. At $2.50 a pop, sampling the entire selection won’t break the bank.
