First Listen: Charlie Brennan
TCS readers, let me introduce you to Mr. Charlie Brennan. After being sent one of his songs by a friend (shout out to DJ Skywalker), I deemed this kid theCampusStyle-worthy. I mean, come on! He’s only a junior in high school and he’s already making dope songs like “Chicago” and “XOXO.” He’s got potential. Peep below for an exclusive one-on-one we scored with this BMOC (Big Man on Campus). I guarantee you’ll have his tracks on repeat while cramming for finals.
theCampusStyle: Heyo! So how old are you and where are you from?
Charlie Brennan: I’m 16 years old and from New York, NY.
TCS: When did you get your start in music? What sparked your interest in music?
CB: I began making music in 5th grade after I started taking some music classes at school. Throughout my life I had always been inspired by the music around me and always wanted to be able to create my own and my school really gave me a great opportunity to pursue it at a young age.
TCS: Do you write your own songs? Where do you get inspiration?
CB: I write all my songs. I’ve collaborated with other kids where we’ve written the songs together, but besides that everything you hear is written by me. I am really inspired by a lot of artists out today. My favorite artists range from Amy Winehouse to Drake to M.I.A. With a lot of inspiration from many different genres, I like to experiment with my music and have a lot of ideas for the future.
TCS: What instruments do you play? Tell us a little bit about your involvement in the making of a song.
CB: I play piano and guitar. I took guitar lessons when I was young, but taught myself to play piano by ear. In every song I’ve written, I first start by playing it on the piano. Then I record it on my computer, record the vocals on my mic, and finish up a demo. Then I bring the demo to my producer where I master the track until we thinks it’s ready. It’s a great experience working with my producer because I get to help him out until I get the exact final product that I want.
TCS: Very nice. What does the future hold for you?
CB: I really would like to keep this music going and see where it takes me. I am in the works on my new EP, which should be out pretty soon.
TCS: What’s your favorite thing about theCampusStyle.com?
CB: I think this site is a great way to connect the public with unknown artists who are unsigned like me.
