The Holidays are a time not only to give thanks for all the amazing things you have in your life, but also a time to give back to those in need. I will keep this post short and sweet because the video tells it all. I’m sure many of you know Coby Golinkoff, a Junior at Tulane and on the tennis team. He and his family created a website all about “joining together and leveraging the power of community to make a difference in the fight against Cystic Fibrosis.” His friends and family are on a mission not only to save their loving sister, daughter and friend, Emily, but also to save the hundreds of thousands of people with CF, and YOU can help. In just four days, the website has made over $25,000!
Have you ever wondered who makes the products that stock the shelves at your local market? Steve Conrad, founder of Forgotten, did. Conrad began trying to find different ways to shop, but he quickly realized that it was extremely hard to do so. He wanted for people to have options, such as Forgotten, that give people a choice to buy a product that can help the individual who made it. Read more >
In the 21st century, it’s hard to escape from being bombarded with media. From which soda to buy to the stereotypical portrayals of men and women, media creates various images of what the status quo should be. Women and girls are especially flooded with these images of what we should look like and how we should act. Honestly, it makes a big impression on us. It is time to change that, and with the Healthy MEdia Commission we can. Read more >
Vince Camuto may not be a household name, but Nine West, the company he co-founded, certainly has that distinction. The designer has been a respected figure in the international fashion industry for the past 30 years and has designed for brands including Tory Burch and BCBG. His namesake line was established in 2005 and now markets iconic shoes, handbags, clothing and jewelry worldwide. Camuto’s continued goal for his line is “creating a product that women really want…infusing great style, comfort and unparalleled value, for every stage of her life.”
While Vince Camuto products are usually only available at Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Dillards, Belk, Macy’s, Lord & Taylor and other specialty stores, UGA’s culturally hip campus has attracted the designer’s chic, big-city style. As of the Fall 2011 semester, student representatives for the Vince Camuto brand are present in Athens generating awareness, hosting trendy events and offering high-end giveaways to scholars on the go.
Cole saw dead people in The Sixth Sense, that one crazy cat saw the Virgin Mary on her grilled cheese sandwich, and now, Eric Telchin is seeing hearts. It all began with chocolate (apparently he’s a man after my own heart). After admiring a heart-shaped drop of chocolate syrup left on the counter after a raging night of ice cream sundaes, Telchin’s sixth sense was revealed; heart hunting. Read more >
Fallen Whistles is a campaign for peace in the Congo. In the past decade, over six million people have died in the war over Congo’s natural resources. Unstable government, local rivalries and international interest in the region’s resources all contribute to the tension and complexity of the issue. Sexual violence is rampant, many children have lost their parents and others are taken as prisoners and forced to fight. The children that are lucky enough to escape are fragile, scared and in desperate need of our help.Read more >

Sure, the flat bill hat is a common accessory for the men of our age–and what makes them all similar is that, in their own way, each hat is stamped with some sort of symbol you immediately recognize. Be it the Atlanta Braves or the New York Yankees, that singular symbol attaches a lot to a person: with whom they affiliate, whom they respect, whom they want to represent on a daily basis.
Instead of sports teams, SEA has crafted a hat unique of the typical flat bill that represents real causes–ones that probably affect you personally. Read more >
Finals may be over, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop (ouch, did that sarcasm sting, POLS 1101?) Now your ferocious trip to the pool (to work on that perfect shade of “be jealous of this glow” tan) can be perfectly accompanied by a mind-electrifying book! Perhaps your weapon of choice is a sweet romance novella like “Franny and Zoey” or maybe you’ve decided to pick up that worn copy of “The Help” that your mother left at your appartement after her visit last Easter (which seemed to only consist of tips on how you could clean the li mescale off of your gazillion-years-old bathtub.) Either way you’re going to need something to keep your place in that book you’ve been toting around. This is where Miss. Callie Heintzman steps in. Paper bookmarks laden with images of kittens and cute owls are SO middle school, Callie has ever so graciously presented us with a much more swank alternative; little knit bookmarks that hug the side of your pages like baby koala bears, providing you with a brilliant built in pen holder (for all you ex-AP Literature students who still can’t fight the urge to annotate any text in sight,) wonderful bursts of color, and an overall sense of happiness! Callie claims that “they will completely revolutionize your favorite book by adding that extra amount of coziness.” Who wouldn’t want that? I know we do. Now why on earth did sweet little Callie start factoring out these little stitches of sunshine? She was quick to inform me that “the creation of these little gems comes from a delightful combination of my passion for yarn and my love for reading. I have decided that it is only right to share this with the athens community!” So do your fine self a favor and run, YOU, run! Off to Agora you go to snatch up your own little knit marvel for only $10 each before all of the other people searching for what’s new in Coolsville get to them before you do.
Located near the register in Agora. $10 each. Pen included.
