Cole saw dead people in The Sixth Sense, that one crazy cat saw the Virgin Mary on her grilled cheese sandwich, and now, Eric Telchin is seeing hearts. It all began with chocolate (apparently he’s a man after my own heart). After admiring a heart-shaped drop of chocolate syrup left on the counter after a raging night of ice cream sundaes, Telchin’s sixth sense was revealed; heart hunting. Read more >
Keeping up with the music scene in Athens is hard. If you took a survey of local musicians, you’d likely find that a large percentage of them are involved in more than one band or project. Maybe we have an unusually large population of folks with ADD. Maybe they’re hedging their bets, hoping that one of their three bands will hit it big. Or it could just be that Athens is incredibly lucky to be buzzing with more creative energy than it knows what to do with.
Enter Our New Silence, one of the most original and visionary projects Athens has seen for some time. Described as “creative cultural diplomacy”, Our New Silence is a collective undertaking that links Athens and Java, Indonesia through music.
Finals may be over, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop (ouch, did that sarcasm sting, POLS 1101?) Now your ferocious trip to the pool (to work on that perfect shade of “be jealous of this glow” tan) can be perfectly accompanied by a mind-electrifying book! Perhaps your weapon of choice is a sweet romance novella like “Franny and Zoey” or maybe you’ve decided to pick up that worn copy of “The Help” that your mother left at your appartement after her visit last Easter (which seemed to only consist of tips on how you could clean the li mescale off of your gazillion-years-old bathtub.) Either way you’re going to need something to keep your place in that book you’ve been toting around. This is where Miss. Callie Heintzman steps in. Paper bookmarks laden with images of kittens and cute owls are SO middle school, Callie has ever so graciously presented us with a much more swank alternative; little knit bookmarks that hug the side of your pages like baby koala bears, providing you with a brilliant built in pen holder (for all you ex-AP Literature students who still can’t fight the urge to annotate any text in sight,) wonderful bursts of color, and an overall sense of happiness! Callie claims that “they will completely revolutionize your favorite book by adding that extra amount of coziness.” Who wouldn’t want that? I know we do. Now why on earth did sweet little Callie start factoring out these little stitches of sunshine? She was quick to inform me that “the creation of these little gems comes from a delightful combination of my passion for yarn and my love for reading. I have decided that it is only right to share this with the athens community!” So do your fine self a favor and run, YOU, run! Off to Agora you go to snatch up your own little knit marvel for only $10 each before all of the other people searching for what’s new in Coolsville get to them before you do.
Located near the register in Agora. $10 each. Pen included.
In a town that assimilates itself so religiously to music, one may never consider to bat an eye at the budding scene of style savvy individuals that parade creativity from the depths of their closets. Well, there’s a new band of horses galavanting the streets. Athens Fashion Collective drives itself on a precedent to reinvent fervor for people & how they express themselves. A carpenter, for instance, takes care in mindfully utilizing his chisel to breathe life into an originally crafted chair. We need tools to bare fruitfulness to our expressive faculties and follow the journey of our thoughts to a destiny of finite forms. A musician communicates by means of a vibration in sound & gripping lyric. A painter voices thought with the smudge of a brush. An image in motion captures the twirling head that lives behind the camera. This can be said of any craft; a chemist & his potions, a chef & his sharpened knifes, an accountant & his numbers. Each makes an impression on the senses. We operate a system of symbols used to measure & perceive the world. In this sense, a needle and thread are both tools. Clothing is a tool. Yes, “fashion” wedges itself within the construct of a name which defines a movement, but this collective stands for something more.
Tonight, Caledonia is getting a face lift. We know & love this joint for housing some of the best local music in Athens. Though a pit-stop to be noted on its own accord, Caledonia will host an evening you don’t want to miss TONIGHT! The music will be rad, of course, but may we take the liberty in saying that THE SCENERY WILL BE RAD, as well! The lovely Eve Nettles & Zach Holloway will flagship a collaborative art installation that will gorge the structure within the four walls which encompass Caledonia. Awesome, right?! Well, it gets batter. Not only will the sights be stimulating, but your ears will have the opportunity to join in on the fun too. Popping off the evening will be the Atlanta based songsters, Young Orkids, followed by the always satisfying dance party brought by The Gold Party. Our friends over at Athens Music Junkie, put it quite well: “it’s rare to come across a band with enough power to make you move but enough content to make you care about the lyrics.” And man, oh man, the dynamic birth child that results from these groove worthy beats is, well, pure gold. While a decked out ‘donia accompanied by two strong groups is enough to get our toes tapping with anticipation, the plot is yet to thicken…Andrew Heaton (Packway Handle) & Karolyn Troupe (Venice is Sinking) serve as the icing on top, as they will be hitting the stage to the likes of powerkompnay, the freshly invented side project dreamed up by the duo. I can hardly wait, nor should you! Event details HERE, don’t miss out on the fun factory!
Some things are not easy to put into words. The visual creations of SoulHawk, a collaboration of Kris D and David Hale, defy language. These home-grown artists, staples of Anchor Tattoo in the Chase Street Warehouses, have once again stopped us in our tracks with the gift of their “Medicina” exhibition, which celebrated its opening on April 2nd at the Young Blood boutique and gallery in Atlanta.
With art, we can foster the regeneration of a better tomorrow!

We believe in ingenuity. In that regard, Deanna Pearlman has got.it.going.on.
This lovely lady is pretty spectacular. Driven by an innate desire to make things, Deanna began to dabble in arts & crafts. As her appreciation for this medium grew, her thirst for something to call her own became more intense. With that yearning, bows were born. Her inspiration comes from a photo of her grandmother, looking prim & proper, dressed in an oversized bow, vibrant in design. These bows are unique, hand-made adornments, yes, but are more importantly an expression of the heart & head that drive Miss Pearlman. As she describes her art: “I love reusing resources & making new things. The way I see it, everyone can pull off bows. They are fun, playful, & feminine. They make you feel bold & sassy. To me, it’s about being a woman in your own unique way; your ability to make a statement. I love sharing that notion with other people!”
Get your fancy paper out & spice up that resume. Stella & Dot is on the hunt for worthy applicants. Find out how to bejewel your basis for business this evening at the Georgia Conference Center at 5pm to school yourself on how to land the job.
Crisis instigates a pit in all of our stomachs. Jaws drop, fists clench & a certain misbelief tugs at our hearts. As Japan finds itself riddled with disillusionment in the wake of March 11, I’d like to impress another league of emotion upon you: hope. In that light, it seems a daunting province to implement an impact with one’s sole action. But that’s the beauty of the impossible. Every voice counts. Every voice of hope starts to slowly rebuild that which has been demoralized. Brick by brick, there is a new beginning, an infrastructure of hope, rather. With that in mind, check out design for Japan, a web gallery of prints which aims to generate financial support for those suffering from the impact of disaster in Japan. And there in lies the reason to advocate the fruitfulness of an artistic movement. Art can facilitate change. The impossible shrinks. With every stroke of a paint brush, every click of a camera, every element of design, there is a voice: a voice which serves to spread information & ignite the fire of betterment. Peruse a selection of prints below &, if you feel so inclined, lend the voice of the hopeful by donating to the relief effort.
