So you’re done with finals…
Celebrate the end of another academically-successful year (we hope) the traditional way–with a good ‘ole Cinco De Mayo siesta one night, Atlanta’s wildest indie/electro dance party the next, topped off with another edition of Fever Friday at Halo Lounge, featuring one of the hottest DJs to ever grace this side of Atlanta. Seriously. We’re not joking.
People assume there can only be so much said for brilliance, but the letters of DJ TAMARA SKY say it all and more (see anagrams DAYSTAR, JAMS, KARMA, SMARTY, SATYR, DRAMA). In an interview with Missbehave Magazine, the Miami-based knockout was up-front about her entrance to the industry. “I didn’t even want to be a DJ,” she says,” I just wanted to learn and liked it. Then some people started being interested.”
But don’t let that trick you into grouping her with the rest of the amateurs. As the interview goes on to explain, unlike many other girls in the game, it wasn’t just her looks that got people hooked. “The problem with female DJs,” she complains, “is that most of them are not good. Some just think, ‘I’m hot, so I’m going to put together a mix tape, act like I’m a DJ, and put some pasties on my boobs.’ [For instance,] DJ Scribble was giving me attitude, then after finishing my gig said, ‘Wow. You’re so good. I really thought you were going to suck.’”
And now to pose a little question of theory: who would win in a matchup of supreme time-management, an undergrad Tech student juggling two part-time jobs while covering style full-time through day and night, or DJ Tamara Sky? We’ll just let the fact that she’s booked year-round at clubs from Canada to Costa Rica speak for itself. This writer knows when it’s time to step down.
