The Wake Forest Student Union recently hosted a Sushi Making Short Course. Student Union short courses are a great opportunity to try something new and exciting or fun and familiar. Students loved this short course, held in Wake’s student center, because it offered them an opportunity to try out making a food they love in a fun setting with friends.

Students commented that the course instructors clearly explained how to make a sushi roll from start to finish and provided fun ingredients like crab and avocado. Many students were surprised at how hard the actual rolling part was but really enjoyed putting the rolls together. Over all students had a great time and are looking forward to the next short course, Dessert Making!

After dodging some students in the street, I finally caught up with this cute CofC sophomore. Nikki is a Communications and Studio Art major and shows her creative side through this black and white ensemble. Her daring high waisted,  wide leg striped pants are from House of Sage and her sheer daisy top is from Free People’s intimates collection. Her red sunglasses add a splash of color this classic black and white look. Nikki also rocks Pulsera bracelets (she’s the president of the Pulsera club on campus). Candy Heart

In a Shaker Glass Add:

1 ½ oz. Godiva Chocolate Liqueur or Baileys

1 ½ oz. Crème De Cacao

½ oz. Vodka

½ oz. Half and Half

Add ice shake well and strain in to a martini glass

Part 2

In a shaker glass Add:

1 ½ oz. Strawberry Puree

¾ oz. Fresh Sweet n Sour

¼ oz. Simple Syrup

2 ½ oz. Whip Cream

Add ice Shake VERY well and slowly strain layer on top of the martini glass filled with the chocolate martini drink.

Garnish with a Strawberry half

Love Potion #9

In a Shaker Glass Add:

1 oz. Stoli Vanilla

½ oz. Watermelon Pucker

1 oz. Cranberry Juice

1 oz. Pineapple Juice

Add ice shake well and strain in to a Champagne flute about ¾ to the top. Top with Champagne. Garnish with a Strawberry Half.

Sweet Tart

In a Shaker Glass Add:

1 ½ oz. Stoli Raspberry

1 oz. Simple Syrup

1 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice

1 bar spoon full of Strawberry Jam

Add ice shake well and strain into a highball glass filled with ice about ¾ to the top. Fill the rest with Champagne.

Meet Singer/Songwriter Lana Del Rey. Lana (Lizzy Grant) has been creating some buzz on the music scene lately with the release of her new record: Born To Die. Described as a cross between Adele and Florence & the Machine, Lana Del Rey’s unique sound is undoubtedly refreshing.

Not only does LDR have the vocals, she is also insanely gorgeous: those pouty lips and doe eyes will certainly win over the masses. She also boasts making her own music videos, another passion of hers besides singing. Watch her exclusive MySpace interview where she talks a little bit about her life, her influences, and her vision as an artist. As you can see, Lana has this very charming, straight-out-of-an-old-time-movie way about her. It’s hard not to fall in love with her innocent awkwardness.

The young starlet has been taking some heat though regarding her not-so-stellar SNL performance. My take on it: she’s young and new to the industry – leave her alone! Plus, I think the SNL stage has seen worse: at least she didn’t fail an attempt to lip sync and cry and run off the stage (flashbacks to Ashlee Simpson’s unforgettable SNL flop). Lana, luckily, got the chance to redeem herself shortly after on the Late Show with David Letterman. She performed one of her most popular songs, ‘Video Games’ beautifully.

I’m in love with the whole album, but some of my favorites are: Diet Mountain Dew, This is What Makes Us Girls, Born to Die, and Summertime Sadness. Lana Del Rey will be a name you will be hearing in the future, so give her a listen!

For even the most indulgent foodies, January marks a time to detox and get our bodies back feeling and functioning the way we want them to.  I’ve started off 2012 by reading the New York Times bestseller “SuperFoods Rx,” written by Steven G. Pratt and Kathy Mathews.  Pratt is a practicing M.D. with great insight on how to eat nutrient-rich foods without pairing a massive caloric intake with it.  He focuses on fourteen “SuperFoods” that are just, well, super foods.

I wanted to share with you all a segment of the book that discusses antioxidants.  Everyone knows antioxidants are good for you, but most of us don’t know exactly why they are so beneficial to our health.  As Pratt explains, our bodies produce by-products as we use oxygen, one of these being “free radicals.”  These free radicals team up with many negative elements in our environment such as pollution, chemicals, certain foods and even the sun. These free radicals are missing an electron, and are therefore unstable.  As they try to restore the missing electron, they attack neighboring cells.  These cells can be anything from enzymes to even our DNA.

Our prime defense against these attacks are antioxidants.  “[Antioxidants] neutralize free radicals, and, in effect, minimize their threat by giving up an electron in effort to stabilize them,” says Pratt.

Bottom line: these tiny molecules are our lifesavers!  We often get caught up in trying to limit our caloric intake, but we cannot forget about gettin’ the goods.  Don’t know where to get them?  I’ve prepared a list of popular foods chock full of antioxidants.

A flash of slouchy stud, then a billowing silk sleeve.  Susannah Joyce meanders through the crowds of Westminster, a phone to her ear.  I finally catch up with her, met by the final line of her phone conversation, “Yes the blue, I looooove it in royal blue.”

As I occupy a few minutes with this animated first-year PR student, I could not keep my eyes off her distressed leather tote.  An invaluable investment from Camden Market.

Susannah adopts a tasseled kimono that insists on billowing in the wind, encapsulating her easy-going attitude.  Teamed with a subtle silk shirt and leather trousers, she toys with different textures to create a multidimensional outfit.  She keeps accessories to the minimum as she rocks each item of clothing as a statement in itself, and flits through uni so fast, your left with a blur of colour and a tassel…or two.

- Emma-Louise Livermore (London-Westminster University)

Indiana’s got it–founder and creator of Green Dream Clothing Co. that is, Adam Swartz.  This sophomore has pulled together a rising organic and philanthropic clothing company just within his short amount of time spent on Bloomington’s campus.  The clothing line is street wear with a social twist: think LRG meets Tom’s shoes, where street style meets everyday comfort.
